A collection of square-shaped coins, believed to be from the Mughal era dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries, were discovered during construction work in the Damoh district of Madhya Pradesh. Made from bronze, silver, and copper, the coins, preliminarily assessed by experts from the archaeological department, are believed to be Mughal-era 'mohurs'. The coins were found at a construction site in Mada of Madiyade village panchayat in Hata district while laborers were digging soil. Many villagers took the coins home, prompting police to ask for their return.

Police suspect that one of them found a broken copper vase containing coins and distributed them to others. The Indian Treasure Trove Act requires such discoveries to be reported to police and archaeological authorities. The coins are expected to be returned after archaeological department officials lodge a complaint. Several other materials, such as Urdu-inscribed coins and those with swastika marks and trishul, were also found in the area. Damoh has a rich history dating back to ancient times, with several excavations finding evidence of human habitation since the stone age. Damoh was part of the Malwa province during the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar. Many of the old temples in the region were destroyed by the Mughals, with the materials used to construct a fort. Damoh has also played a significant role in India's struggle for freedom from British rule.
