The Bank of Korea issued South Korean Won banknotes in 11 different denominations, including this 500 South Korean won banknote (1973 issue). They are part of the withdrawn South Korean Won banknotes series. The Bank of Korea started issuing these 500 South Korean Won banknotes in 1973. They were withdrawn from circulation in 1993.
This 500 won banknote from the Republic of Korea honours Yi Sun-sin, a 16th Century Korean Admiral who is considered to be one of the greatest naval commanders of all time. The front of the note shows Yi Sun-sin and a geobukseon or turtle ship. Turtle shiops are the Korean warships used during the Joseon dynasty. The back of the 500 won note depiucts Yi Sun-sin’s Shrine at Hyeonchungsa, located in Asan-si.
