Man discovers rare Ancient Greek coin featuring Alexander the Great and Zeus while cleaning mother's home

A British man, aged 25, discovered an Ancient Greek coin featuring Alexander the Great and Zeus while cleaning his mother's attic. The man found the coin two years ago while weeding the lawn but forgot about it after storing it in a drawer. While clearing out the attic, he found a bronze vase that his late father had bought years ago, and it was sold at an auction for £1,450, which was more than twice the estimated guide price. The man, who has not been named, now hopes to sell the coin, which is expected to fetch between £200-£300 at the auction on March 8.

Charles Hanson, an Antiques Road Trip star, confirmed that the coin is known as a tetradrachm and would have been minted during the reign of Alexander the Great in approximately 336-323 BC. The coin features Alexander the Great and the guise of Hercules on one side and Zeus seated on the other. Tetradrachms were popularly used as coins in antiquity and are still keenly collected due to their high artistic value. Depending on their rarity and condition, they can fetch high prices today. In its time, the coin could have bought luxurious items such as horses, weapons, or jewelry, and it was worth four times a man's daily wage. The discovery of the coin has turned out to be a valuable gift that the man's father left for his family.
