The Royal Canadian Mint has unveiled a new gold coin designed in the shape of a traditional Ukrainian Easter egg, known as a "pysanka." This latest addition to the Mint's collection features sunflowers, and is being marketed as the eighth in a series of Easter egg coins. According to a statement on the Mint's website, the new 2023 pure gold pysanka coin is meant to honor Ukrainian culture and artistry in Canada.
The coin's design features the image of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and is crafted from 58.5 grams of pure gold, with a denomination of 250 Canadian dollars. Despite its modest face value, the coin is valued at nearly 7,000 dollars, with only 275 coins available for purchase worldwide. The Mint notes that previous pysanka coins in their collection have sold out quickly.
This year, the proceeds from the sale of both gold and silver pysanka coins will be donated to the Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal, a charitable organization aimed at supporting Ukrainians affected by the ongoing conflict with Russia. The coin was designed by Susanna Blunt and Dave Melnychuk, a Canadian of Ukrainian descent and a member of the Ukrainian Museum of Canada in Toronto.
